Abstract: Advanced Data Recovery Techniques for SSD

As solid-state drives become more complex in design, more secure and are deployed into large enterprise environments, the data stored on them becomes increasingly more valuable. Even with increased reliability, unique device failure and data loss can and does occur, requiring new tools and technologies to recover valuable user data.
In this presentation, we will define some of the challenges for data recovery providers and discuss some advanced lab processes used to diagnose and recover data from failed solid-state storage devices. Two relevant case studies will be presented:
An enterprise PCIe SSD in a tiered, virtualized storage environment
A complex chip-off technique on an encrypted SSD
Attendees will gain a greater awareness of the challenges and processes used to recover data from ever more complex solid-state storage devices, particularly when valuable data needs to be recovered for large corporate environments.

Speaker Bio: Jim Wilhelmsen, SSD Recovery Specialist

As an SSD Recovery Specialist, Jim Wilhelmsen is a senior member of DriveSavers R&D team with special focus on SSD and other non-volatile memory storage devices. He joined DriveSavers in 2005 with ten years of experience in electronics manufacturing and retail sales. Jim specs, builds and maintains custom data recovery workstations and software tools for DriveSavers lab engineers. He also developed the program for post recovery customer support, and is dedicated to providing the best possible experience for DriveSavers customers.

Chair Person Bio: Chris Bross, Chief Technology Officer

As Chief Technology Officer, Chris Bross manages the R&D team for emerging storage technologies and guides the development of new tools, technology and techniques to overcome unique challenges and recover critical user data. Since joining the company in 1995, Bross has engineered his way around physical trauma, mechanical damage and encryption issues to recover data on all types of failed storage devices. Prior to joining DriveSavers, Bross held technical engineering positions at Golden Triangle Software and Adobe Systems, Inc. Bross’ expertise is in recovering RAID, NAS and SAN storage systems with a specialization in UNIX, Linux and Macintosh.
