DIY phone repairs can be risky, but one recent case took things to an extreme when fixing a phone screen led to a fire!

A customer hoping to avoid repair costs attempted an iPhone screen repair at home and accidentally overheated his device, triggering a battery fire. Within moments, the phone’s lithium-ion battery ignited, melting internal components and leaving behind what seemed like an unsalvageable mess.

The burned smartphone had years of personal photos, videos, and essential contacts. With the phone utterly destroyed, the customer assumed everything was gone.

How an iPhone Screen Replacement Led to a Fire

This iPhone had been through a lot—multiple drops had cracked the screen. Instead of seeking professional repair, the owner decided to fix it himself. However, during the repair, he applied too much heat to loosen the adhesive, which caused the battery to overheat and char the iPhone from the inside out.

Once thermal runaway began—a chain reaction inside the battery—there was no stopping it. The phone ignited, causing extensive internal damage. Unlike a typical drop-your-phone accident, this failure caused severe internal damage and made recovery even more challenging. The battery connector fused to the board, plastic components melted together, and the 5G antenna and other essential parts were burned beyond recognition.

The device was no longer repairable; all signs pointed to permanent data loss. In addition, DIY attempts voided his warranty coverage, so there was no protection plan.

Mike Cobb
Directeur de l'ingénierie
, DriveSavers Data Recovery

DriveSavers Recovers the Data

Despite the fire damage, there was still hope. The phone was beyond saving, but the data inside wasn’t necessarily lost. Our engineers specialize in extreme data recovery—even in cases where a phone seems beyond repair. They took a meticulous, multi-step approach to extract the critical files stored inside.

First, DriveSavers engineers carefully removed and disposed of the damaged battery, separating the melted connector from the phone’s logic board. They then desoldered the burned antenna module from the board and removed melted debris, inspecting the logic board for underlying chip damage. Fortunately, the primary storage components were still intact, which meant the possibility of recovering the data.

Next, they created a stable boot environment. Because the phone couldn’t power on normally, the engineers desoldered the two halves of the logic board and used specialized tools to bypass the damaged components and safely access the data. After entering the correct passcode, the device booted up into a recovery state.

The engineers extracted and verified over 40GB of data, including thousands of photos, videos, and contacts. Even though the phone was unsalvageable, DriveSavers fully recovered the customer’s priceless memories.

The Hidden Dangers of DIY Phone Repair

This case is a cautionary tale about the risks of DIY phone repair, particularly when dealing with modern iPhones that have tightly integrated lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are highly sensitive and can become volatile if punctured, mishandled, or exposed to excessive heat. In recent years, lithium-ion battery fires have become more common, posing significant dangers to users who attempt repairs without the proper tools or expertise.

Many people assume that if a device is physically destroyed—whether from fire, water damage, or severe impact—their data is lost forever. However, that isn’t always the case. Even when a phone appears beyond repair, specialized data recovery techniques can often retrieve critical information. With the right expertise and advanced technology, valuable photos, messages, contacts, and documents may still be recovered, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise disastrous situation.

How to Save Data on a Smartphone that Experiences Extreme Damage

If a smartphone has suffered a battery fire, severe liquid damage, or other catastrophic failure, taking the right steps can make the difference between recovery and permanent data loss.

  1. Assess the damage – If the device shows signs of fire, corrosion, or significant board damage, contact a professional data recovery service; a traditional repair will not help.
  2. Avoid powering it on – Attempting to turn on a damaged phone can cause further short circuits or, in the case of water damage, corrosion, reducing the chances of recovery.
  3. Handle the logic board carefully – In cases of extreme damage, improper handling can make recovery more complex.
  4. Seek professional data recovery services – Even if a phone is no longer functional, a data recovery specialist may still be able to retrieve the stored information.
Final Takeaway: A Destroyed Phone Doesn’t Mean Lost Data

Even in extreme situations—like a battery fire—there’s still hope for recovering critical data. Professional data recovery services can often retrieve what seems lost forever, whether a data storage device has been burned, crushed, or submerged in water.

We specialize in recovering data from severely damaged devices. In addition, DriveSavers is an Apple Recommended Service Provider, so your iPhone warranty will never be voided by our data recovery service.

If you or someone you know has experienced catastrophic phone damage, don’t assume everything is gone. Contact DriveSavers today to learn more about how we can help.

⚠️ Warning: Before Restoring Data from Cloud Storage ⚠️

Restoring data from a cloud backup can overwrite existing files on the device you are restoring to. Before proceeding:

Use a brand-new device whenever possible to prevent data loss.

If restoring to an existing device, back up any new data (such as recent photos, messages, or documents) first.

If you only need specific files or photos, manually download them instead of performing a full system restore.

Consult an IT professional if you are unsure whether restoring from a backup is the best option for your situation.

Once data is overwritten by new data, it cannot be recovered, so proceed with caution!

DriveSavers Review: A Surgeon’s Most Precious Memories Recovered

DriveSavers successfully recovered data from a mechanically failed Western Digital My Passport for Mac external hard drive belonging to a trauma surgeon. The engineers restored 45,000 photos and videos while preserving the original file structure. Using advanced techniques, they accomplished what other companies had considered impossible.

The drive held over 15 years of cherished memories, including early dates with his girlfriend—now wife—their wedding and the birth and milestones of their two sons. Two data recovery companies told him his data was lost forever, saying, “If they can’t do it, nobody can.” Devastated but determined, he refused to give up. That’s when he discovered DriveSavers Data Recovery.

“As doctors, we ensure our patients understand every step of the process before and after surgery. DriveSavers did the same for me. They were thorough, honest, and clear at every stage.”

DriveSavers data recovery engineers conducted a thorough evaluation in a certified cleanroom environment. Despite severe mechanical failure, the team successfully imaged the device, rebuilt the folder structure, and recovered all requested photos. Throughout the process, providing regular promised updates. In the end, every precious moment was restored, giving back the memories once thought lost forever.

I never thought I’d be that guy to whip out pictures of his kids, but I am definitely that guy. My name is Jonathan Prior. I live in Carson, California, and I’m a general and trauma surgeon.

So when my, our youngest, Liam, was born October of two thousand sixteen, and our oldest, Jacob, is just now meeting his younger brother for the first time. I’m not that tech savvy, but I do realize that on my laptop, it was, the amount of pictures I had taken was just taking up too much hard drive on the computer. So I got an external hard drive to put all my pictures, all my videos on it, and everything was working out fine. I said I’m not that tech savvy because I never used a cloud to back up my pictures and videos.

So when that external hard drive started clicking and making some noises one day, I knew I was in trouble. Found one location, and I took it there. They couldn’t do anything with it, so they sent it to another company. They said, if they can’t do it, nobody can do it.

The last fifteen years of my life, over forty five thousand pictures and videos from the, when I first met my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, pictures of our first dates, our trips we were taking, our, wedding. I was like, these are some precious pictures.

Please, there’s gotta be one other place. And that’s when they told me, DriveSavers. And the experience has been, you know, impeccable, marvelous. Just the customer service has been out of this world.

And everything they said they were gonna do along the process, they did. We’ll give you a call, we’ll give you a weekly update, once this step in the process is accomplished, this is what’s gonna happen, and that’s what happened. And as a surgeon, I like to do the same thing with my patients. You have to have an informed consent before I operate on the patient, and the patient has to have a complete understanding, and after the surgery, you have to make daily rounds, you have to keep the patient updated, keep the family updated, and I felt that’s what they were doing to me.

I think they’re peerless, second to none. I was told by two companies, two organizations, there was nothing they could do and DriveSavers took care of the job. Very, refreshing, heartwarming experience to be able to visualize all those memories once again.

These times do go by fast, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. But DriveSavers was able to bring them back and give me a second chance with them.

January 31, 2025 – Novato, CA, DriveSavers Data Recovery has announced an extension of its $1 million free data recovery program for victims of the recent Southern California wildfires. Originally set to expire, this offer will now be available through February 15, 2025, ensuring that more individuals, families, and businesses have access to professional data recovery services at no cost.

“As the recovery process continues for those impacted by these devastating fires, we want to ensure that anyone in need still has the opportunity to recover their critical data,” said Alex Hagan, CEO of DriveSavers Data Recovery. “Extending this offer is our way of standing by the affected communities and providing a vital service during a difficult time.”

Program Details

DriveSavers is offering free data recovery services—up to a total value of $1 million—to those affected by the wildfires. This initiative is designed to assist individuals and businesses that have suffered data loss due to fire, smoke, or heat damage to their devices.

Eligible individuals may receive data recovery services for:

  • Fire-damaged computers, external hard drives, and SSDs
  • Burnt or heat-exposed smartphones, tablets, and flash drives
  • Devices impacted by smoke or water used in firefighting efforts

How to Apply for Free Data Recovery Services

Those impacted by the wildfires can contact DriveSavers for assistance by calling 1 (800) 440-1904. The company advises wildfire victims to avoid attempting to power on or clean fire-damaged devices, as these actions may reduce the chances of successful recovery.

“For many, the data on these devices represents irreplaceable memories, business records, and important documents,” said Hagan. “We remain committed to doing everything we can to help people rebuild what was lost.”
