disk drive spinning away inside a desktop or a solid-state drive soldered into a laptop. Capacity, speed, form factor, price: there’s a lot to weigh before you buy. But most people skip the question sitting underneath all of that. Who makes hard drives in the first place?

The answer is shorter than you’d think. As of 2026, only three hard drive manufacturers still build HDDs: Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital. That’s it. Several of the biggest names in storage — Samsung, SanDisk, Kingston, Crucial, and HP among them — either left the hard disk drive business years ago or never made hard drives at all. They still belong on this list, though, because they’re where most of today’s flash memory and SSDs come from.

Search for hard drive brands, hard disk brands, or hard disc brands, and you’ll usually get a list that mixes those two groups together. So here’s the hard disk drive company list as it actually stands: what each company makes today, and for the ones that got out, when they got out.

If you landed here because a drive just stopped working, the next section covers how to identify what you have, and what not to do while you work that out.

How to Find Out Who Made Your Hard Drive

One warning comes before everything else here. So if you’ve owned a drive under some other brand name in the past thirty years, there’s a decent chance it was a Seagate underneath.

Seagate has historically competed hard on price for consumers, which is part of why its drives turn up so often in external enclosures and prebuilt desktops. On February 24, 2025, Western Digital completed the separation of its flash business. SanDisk is now an independent, publicly traded company again. WD kept the hard drives and is, for the first time in years, a hard-drive-focused company. Most of the hard disk companies that defined storage in the 1980s and 1990s don’t exist as independent businesses anymore.

The reason comes down to how difficult these things are to build profitably. A read/write head flies over a spinning platter at a height measured in nanometers, close enough that a single speck of dust is a catastrophe, and manufacturing to that tolerance takes fabrication plants that cost billions and only pay for themselves at enormous volume. Meanwhile the price per gigabyte fell year after year, and flash memory took the high-margin consumer business away. Companies that couldn’t reach the necessary scale sold their drive divisions to companies that could.
