Basically, if\u00a0it&#8217;s got data on it, these guys recover\u00a0it. And they turn to me\u2014they&#8217;re like, &#8220;look, we know you&#8217;re not here for very long\u00a0but\u2014I mean, we don&#8217;t normally do this as\u00a0part of the tour\u2014do you want to get\u2014do you want to get suited up and do you\u00a0want to rip apart a hard drive and do\u00a0an actuator swap on a real hard drive\u00a0in a real cleanroom?&#8221; And I&#8217;m like, &#8220;what kind\u00a0of stupid question is that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Help, Pelle! I&#8217;m trapped in a cage! <em>[pounds on glass door]<\/em> Oh, we&#8217;re making a\u00a0face. Okay, you know I&#8217;m just gonna\u2014I&#8217;m just gonna be a nice YouTuber.<\/p>\n<p>So inside\u00a0here, it&#8217;s certified to be less than a\u00a0hundred thousand point one micron\u00a0particles per cubic meter of air. So it&#8217;s, like, ten thousand times cleaner than regular air. Oh, this is hot! Here we go. Well, that&#8217;s a heavy door.<br \/>\nSo the whole\u00a0room is positively pressurized. They&#8217;ve\u00a0got, I think, it&#8217;s thirty-five fans\u00a0running pushing air constantly downward. Look at that\u2014look at this stuff! SSD, PCB&#8230; You know\u2014no big deal. It&#8217;s freakin&#8217; crazy! Okay, maybe your suits are, like, better than mine but, like, I&#8217;m serious. Okay, okay. So, yeah. &#8220;This guy can&#8217;t even sit in a chair. How&#8217;s\u00a0he gonna fix a hard drive?&#8221; Look\u2014some of us\u00a0don&#8217;t do data recovery every day.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, he&#8217;s like, &#8220;this is the most boring part.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like, if I bleed in here is it, uh, there&#8217;s\u00a0a contamination problem? In here, the\u00a0theory is that it is so clean that I\u00a0don&#8217;t need to seal the drive back up, is\u00a0that right? Like, can I just run it open?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Correct.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Can we run this one without the\u00a0lid on just to show it doing it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em>\u00a0This one, we\u00a0cannot.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>We cannot.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon: This drive will not run without the lid on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Really? It just has, like, a sensor or something?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> No, it has a little nub on the lid which puts a little bit of pressure on the actuator to keep it down so it keeps it level.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Ooohhh&#8230;Interesting. So, it&#8217;s not just&#8230;it&#8217;s not just a pretty\u00a0face.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> No.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> The lid is actually functional.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Correct. So what you see here, this notch right here sits on the actuator right here.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Oh, wow\u2014so it actually holds the entire\u00a0actuator assembly down.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Well it just gives you a little\u00a0pressure. Correct.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Oh, interesting. So, check this\u00a0out. So, you&#8217;ve actually got four\u00a0read\/write heads because each of these\u00a0platters can store data on both sides here.<\/p>\n<p>So, what else can we say about this? So&#8230;so this guy right here holds these in\u00a0place when it&#8217;s off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Correct. This is what we call the &#8220;off platter parking ramp.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>So the read\/write heads actually, like, are basically, like, they&#8217;re flying over these spinning\u00a0platters. And these are going at, you know, up to 7,200 RPM these days. They used to\u00a0go higher in some cases, but on a consumer\u00a0drive these go up to 7,200 RPM and\u00a0it&#8217;s basically like that\u2014like a fly\u00a0flying around in a hurricane, like, twelve inches off the ground. Like, it&#8217;s, like, it&#8217;s stupid. So, anytime you&#8217;re not\u00a0actively reading or writing data, you\u00a0want them, like, out of the way because if\u00a0these contact there then you gotta send\u00a0your drive to DriveSavers, period. And anything they touched is\u2014they\u00a0ain&#8217;t getting that back. Actually\u2014that&#8217;s\u00a0one of the scenarios where you might\u00a0have to do what we&#8217;re about to do, which\u00a0is an actuator swap, where if it\u00a0accidentally makes contact the metal\u00a0shards inside are so damaging that they\u00a0could just tear apart these tiny fragile\u00a0heads.<\/p>\n<p>Okay. Hit me with the next step.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it\u00a0doesn&#8217;t say &#8220;do not eat&#8221; on it, but that is\u00a0definitely desiccant and you definitely\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t eat it. You should&#8217;t eat anything in a hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>This is&#8230;my\u00a0hands are shaking. That&#8217;s as steady as I can hold it. I&#8217;ll\u00a0just get some two-handed assistance in\u00a0there. Thank you. All I would have to do\u00a0is drop this screw conveniently\u00a0nonferrous. Oh, probably for a reason\u2014there&#8217;s magnets in here. You can really feel\u00a0it, like, when you\u2014oh, right. Like snaps\u00a0into place there. Okay. And the stopper is\u00a0this black guy right here, right?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Correct.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Okay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em>\u00a0You are gonna hold that right there without letting it fall off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Yup.<\/p>\n<p><em>John:\u00a0<\/em>And get\u00a0this transport comb. And keep the heads separated, which is a\u00a0version of this that we had made\u00a0in-house ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Very cool.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> So, what you are going to do, is keep that\u2014slide that between there and try to get the actuator assemply off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> So, did I kill it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Not yet\u2014not that I know\u00a0of.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Is it probably dead now?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Possibly. But\u00a0let&#8217;s&#8230;You know what? Let&#8217;s let you\u00a0continue with it like this first.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Okay. Does it matter which way you go?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> No. You want to bring that off close to the edge a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>Oh! I&#8217;m\u00a0weak.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> And hold the magnet at the same time because all of it has to come out at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Yeah\u2014I gotta switch hands. I didn&#8217;t\u00a0think this through.<\/p>\n<p>Okay. Ah! Where do I put it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Just place it straight down on the table. ESD mat\u2014no worries.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Okay.<\/p>\n<p>If I just wanted\u00a0to know for sure if I killed it, could we\u00a0try it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> I can tell you right now that we\u00a0did.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Oh.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:\u00a0<\/em>I see the head stack is bent.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Uh, oh.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> The tip of the head is bent which creases upward like this. So, they should lay flat out this way. Right now, it&#8217;s laying flat this way and you have it coming up like this.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Here\u2014have a look at that, Pelle. That&#8217;s the\u00a0bottom one\u2014it curls up a bit.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon: <\/em>It curls up. What that is going to do&#8230;When I put that into a good drive right now&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Okay. It&#8217;s gonna scratch\u00a0up the bottom platter.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> It&#8217;s going to scatch up\u00a0the bottom\u00a0platter on side zero.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> So, now, when we started this video, the intent was to just take a platter\u00a0out of a working drive, put it back in\u00a0and demonstrate that it still worked. What we&#8217;re ending up with is that, in\u00a0order to fix this drive, we need a donor\u00a0drive because this is actually a very\u00a0common failure. I mean, not an idiot\u00a0opening your drive and bending your read head and\u00a0write head or whatever, but just a\u00a0platter crash.<\/p>\n<p>Failed actuator assembly. Thank you. And I&#8217;m gonna try this again\u00a0but, like, super more carefully this time. And I know how the combs work.<\/p>\n<p>All right. I&#8217;m gonna try and be more organized\u00a0about these this time. So, this is step\u00a0one. I want to do it right this time. I don&#8217;t like failing at stuff.<\/p>\n<p>So you&#8217;ve\u00a0done\u2014I was told over 50,000 of these?<\/p>\n<p>Oh\u2014new\u00a0trainees\u2014they got to do about 3,000\u00a0before they touch a customer hard drive.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Before they touch a live job.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Wow!<\/p>\n<p>Okay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon<\/em><em>: <\/em>There you are.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> No, what we are going to do before you do anything else.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Yeah.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> We want to label our donor drive.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Oh, okay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Let&#8217;s pu a &#8220;DS&#8221; on there for DriveSavers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Where?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon: <\/em>Right\u00a0on the magnet here, please\u2014&#8221;DS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Isn&#8217;t that redundant if I put it here?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Yeah, but you know what? But, like I said, a lot of people, before they touch any live drives, it&#8217;s typically three-thousand swaps before they get to touch a customer&#8217;s job.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Right. Okay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:\u00a0<\/em>This is one of the reasons why.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Right.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, man. My hands are still shaking\u00a0like crazy. I would say I&#8217;ve never been\u00a0more stressed to find out if a hard\u00a0drive works but I definitely have. Anyone\u00a0who&#8217;s seen the Wanek server video will\u00a0know that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s there! Okay. So, it&#8217;s\u00a0detected but that doesn&#8217;t tell us that\u00a0much, does it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> It tells us&#8230;That&#8217;s a great step.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:\u00a0<\/em>Okay.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, enter&#8217;s okay. But\u00a0would K work? Theoretically, yes\u2014right?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> I\u00a0would assume so. Let&#8217;s try it.<\/p>\n<p>Hey!<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em> Hey! Wait\u2014hey, hey!<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> And we&#8217;re imaging.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Is that good?<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon: <\/em>That&#8217;s good. Green is good.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Green is good!<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> So we are imaging right now. So, it is telling me it&#8217;s imaging a three terabyte drive. That&#8217;s your total block count right here. We are writing to an eight terabyte target.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus: <\/em>Okay.\u00a0So it&#8217;ll take nine hours.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> Roughly. Approximately. Now, this is how it should work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus: <\/em>But\u00a0we consider this\u00a0a very good first step.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon: <\/em>Very. This is excellent\u2014for the physical aspect of the drive.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0right? So, we\u00a0saw&#8230;We&#8217;ve seen no even pink so far. No\u00a0yellow&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Jon:<\/em> No red, no yellow as of yet\u2014as of\u00a0yet.<\/p>\n<p><em>Linus:<\/em>\u00a0Okay. Get a b-roll of that! B-roll of that.<\/p>\n<p>So, there\u00a0you have it, guys. We&#8217;re only 0% of the way through, so, you\u00a0know, it&#8217;s hardly completely conclusive\u00a0but we are tentatively calling the\u00a0operation a success. Which is really\u00a0exciting. It&#8217;s all green so far. However, I\u00a0do need to be very clear that this was a\u00a0best-case scenario. We had two working\u00a0drives that had never been opened before. So even though I personally broke the\u00a0heads on one of them, we knew that\u00a0the rest of it was good\u2014there was no\u00a0firmware corruption, there was no media\u00a0damage, there was no heat damage or\u00a0whatever else these guys might deal with\u00a0on a daily basis. But I&#8217;m still\u00a0really excited about it and I&#8217;m still\u00a0really grateful that I got the\u00a0opportunity to try this out.<\/p>\n<p>So, thanks\u00a0for watching, guys.
