{"id":7697,"date":"2016-12-08T11:14:06","date_gmt":"2016-12-08T19:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:drivesaversdatarecovery.com\/\/?p=7697"},"modified":"2023-12-18T01:52:57","modified_gmt":"2023-12-18T09:52:57","slug":"drivesavers-1-great-barrier-reef-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drivesaversdatarecovery.com\/en-ca\/blog\/drivesavers-1-great-barrier-reef-0\/","title":{"rendered":"DriveSavers 1, Great Barrier Reef 0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first iPhone 7 recoveries ever done in the world involved a device sent to DriveSavers after it went overboard on a trip to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newest iPhone is advertised as water-resistant*, but this one could not survive the November 8, 2016 dunking into approximately 10 feet of water in the Coral Sea just off the coast of Queensland.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The user, who is from South Carolina, asked to remain anonymous, but he agreed to talk to DriveSavers about the experience.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He told us the phone slipped overboard on a tour boat excursion.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt fell in, and I was able to retrieve it. I wiped it off, but it didn&#8217;t work too well after that,\u201d the user explained. \u201cI took a couple more (pictures) and a video and then it died. The water had gotten in where the battery was.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of his photos and videos from the visit to Australia were at risk as well as his contacts and address book information. None of this data was backed up elsewhere, so recovery of the water-soaked phone was the only hope for visual memories of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he got back to the United States, the phone\u2019s owner went to a company called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubreakifix.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uBreakiFix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that repairs damaged iPhones. In this case, the phone was not repairable, so they recommended DriveSavers for data recovery.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey (uBreakiFix) opened it up in the shop and tried to fix it, but that wasn\u2019t possible,\u201d the user explained. \u201cThen, they recommended DriveSavers and we took it there and it worked out. All of our pictures from our two-week trip were recovered.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pioneer in data recovery since 1985, DriveSavers has been recovering data from damaged, malfunctioning and broken iPhones since Apple\u2019s first smartphone model was introduced nearly ten years ago.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step at DriveSavers was to evaluate the condition of the phone and its contents.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we opened the phone, we found what we suspected\u2014salt water corrosion\u201d explained Mike Cobb, director of engineering at DriveSavers. \u201cThis can be very damaging, but we were able to work through it.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn cases like this, our engineering team has to go through every component on the phone,\u201d Cobb said. \u201cIf the chips had been totally corroded, this would have been a lost cause, but we got it in time to pull the data of these digital memories.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very few places in the world have the right combination of tools and talent to make this kind of tragedy end with a celebration.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uBreakiFix knows phones well and does an outstanding job with repair. It\u2019s this understanding that helps them quickly identify when a situation requires tools that are not available to them, and they regularly send such devices to DriveSavers. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou know, if you take something like this to the wrong shop, then you\u2019re toast because they don\u2019t really know what they are doing,\u201d the user said. \u201cI was very pleased with everything DriveSavers was able to do. It was a very seamless experience.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*According to Apple, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are splash, water and dust resistant and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear.
