But first, <\/span>how does a hard drive work<\/b>, anyway? Hard drives are comprised of a series of magnetized platters where your information is stored. To retrieve data, spindles spin the platters so read-write heads can find the information you want. If the spindles fail, you can\u2019t get to what\u2019s stored on the drive. <\/span><\/p>\n

Spindle malfunctions occur for several reasons, one of them being lubrication failure. In this case, first the spindles can\u2019t spin, then the platters can\u2019t rotate, and<\/span> finally, the read-write heads can\u2019t access the data. Theoretically, <\/span>freezing a hard drive <\/b>could shrink the hard drive components and bring them back into alignment. Makes sense, right?<\/span><\/p>\n

This trick was so widely used that some hardware companies even designed their machines to run in extremely cold environments, increasing the chances of hard drive revival, should a lockup occur. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Before you freeze, stop!<\/span><\/h2>\n

But before you stick your <\/span>hard drive in the freezer<\/b>, there are a few things you should know. Today hard drives are far more advanced, so freezing has a much bigger impact. Hard drives are now built using incredibly precise measurements. Even the smallest shift in placement\u2014the entire point of the freezer trick\u2014can negatively affect the read-write heads\u2019 ability to read your hard drive. <\/span><\/p>\n
