{"id":7432,"date":"2016-09-22T13:13:32","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T20:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:drivesaversdatarecovery.com\/\/?p=7432"},"modified":"2024-01-10T21:44:11","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T05:44:11","slug":"sms-text-phishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drivesaversdatarecovery.com\/en-au\/blog\/sms-text-phishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Get Caught by SMS Text Phishing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid wpex-relative\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><em>By Michael Hall, Chief Information Security Officer<\/em><br \/>\n<b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a regular reader of our blog, you are already familiar with phishing emails from an article we posted earlier this year, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t Get Caught by Phishing or Other Email Attacks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phishing is a tactic used by criminals to disguise themselves in a way that makes a victim trust them, and then trick that victim into providing valuable personal information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit card information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank account information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Login and password information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Security Number<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything else that might be valuable<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you may not realize is that phishing isn\u2019t confined to emails and web browsing. Every day, people are fooled on their phones through spoofed text messages.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spoof messages are sometimes easy to spot, but not always. These fraudulent communications look like they come from a trusted source or someone you know, but they are not what they appear to be.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, never trust messages that claim to be from your bank that include links or ask for information. Instead of replying with your personal info or going to the link, try calling your bank directly to discuss the content of the text. Use a phone number from your bank card or statement. This security protocol applies to messages from any number you don\u2019t recognize. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should constantly be on guard, especially for some new phishing attempts via iMessages that look authentic, but are actually bogus messages designed to steal your personal or financial information.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s an example of a current phishing attempt that iPhone users are receiving via iMessage:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This scheme is kind of a tricky one. Aside from the pretty bad fake Apple domain (&#8220;appleid.ios-icloud-server.com\/us&#8221;), it seems like a legitimate message you might get from Apple. However, this is not an authentic communication from Apple. It\u2019s a fake\u2014don\u2019t open it!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you receive a message like this or any other message that you\u2019re not 100% certain about, don&#8217;t use the included link. Instead, log into your Apple ID account directly at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appleid.apple.com\/#!&amp;page=signin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/appleid.apple.com\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From there, you can verify all of your logged-in devices. In fact, we would recommend that users do this a few times a year as a matter of habit, just to keep tabs on their devices.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;d like to make your Apple ID more secure, two-factor authentication is a simple way to do that. Once you have it set up, two-factor verification will be required any time you sign in to manage your Apple ID, sign into iCloud or make an iTunes, iBooks or App Store purchase from a new device.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You enter your password<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple sends a unique access code to a device that you have previously designated with Apple as a \u201ctrusted device\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You enter the access code on the login page<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As described on the Apple Support website, you can follow the steps below to turn on two-factor authentication.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 9 or later:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to Settings &gt; iCloud &gt; tap your Apple ID<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tap Password &amp; Security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tap Turn on Two-Factor Authentication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On your Mac with OS X El Capitan or later:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to Apple (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) menu &gt; System Preferences &gt; iCloud &gt; Account Details<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click Security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click Turn on Two-Factor Authentication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit Apple\u2019s two-factor authentication support page for more information.<\/span> <\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you receive a junk\/phishing message on your device, block the sender\u2019s number. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to do that on an iOS device, like an iPhone or iPad.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Michael Hall, Chief Information Security Officer If you\u2019re a regular reader of our blog, you are already familiar with phishing emails from an article we posted earlier this year, Don\u2019t Get Caught by Phishing or Other Email Attacks.
